Week-on-week changes
Among the 100 companies, the median price-to-book ratio fell 0.01x to 1.87x in the week to 9 October, from 1.88x a week earlier. Their median trailing dividend yield was 1.93%, the same as a week earlier.
What three valuation models make of these ratios
The median earnings yield of the 92 companies with positive earnings was 5.48%, 2.42 points above the 10-year government bond yield of 3.06% on 30 September. The Fed model reads that gap as the extra return shares offer over bonds before any growth, a rough equity risk premium.
Their median dividend yield of 1.93% sat 1.13 points below the same bond yield. In the Gordon growth model, the return a shareholder requires equals the dividend yield plus the dividend growth rate. A required return of at least the bond yield therefore implies dividend growth of at least 1.13% a year.
The middle half of the 96 companies had price-to-book ratios between 1.18x and 3.29x, and 11 of them (11.46%) were priced below book value. Their median ROE was 10.40%, with the middle half between 8.50% and 13.90%.
In the residual-income model with no growth, price-to-book equals ROE divided by the required return. A price below book value therefore means the price implies a required return above the company's ROE.
The median payout ratio of the 91 companies with both figures was 35.35%. By the sustainable growth formula, ROE times the share of earnings kept, the retained part is what lets equity and dividends grow without new shares.
Ratios withheld after share splits
This week's medians are taken across the 96 companies with a price-to-book ratio and the 95 with a yield. Kioxia Holdings, Ibiden, Tokyo Electron and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group are left out because they split their shares after their latest annual reports.
Their share prices are on the new share basis, while their filed per-share figures are not. Their price-to-book ratio, earnings multiple, dividend yield and market value stay blank until an annual report covers the split.
Market backdrop
The 10-year government bond yield was 3.06% on 30 September, the Ministry of Finance's latest month-end point. The Bank of Japan's overnight call rate was 1.23% on 7 October, as on 30 September.
What the screens found
The low-PBR and value screens list every company among the 100 that met each stated rule in the week to 9 October. The dividend screens list the companies with no dividend cut, and those with the highest trailing yield, from their annual reports.
The buyback, tender-offer and large-holding screens read filings on EDINET, the Financial Services Agency's disclosure system. New-listing filings are on the IPO page.
Corrections
The yen strengthened against the dollar in the quarter to 30 September, to ¥156.91 per dollar from ¥162.26 on 30 June. The previous issue gave the wrong direction and was corrected on 8 October 2026. Its corrected medians for the week to 2 October are 1.88x for the price-to-book ratio and 1.93% for the dividend yield.
